At the age of 21, dressmaker Thomas Burberry established his eponymous company, initially specialising in outdoor attire. The first store opened in the same year on Winchester Street, Basingstoke.
Creating an icon
In 1879, Thomas Burberry invented gabardine. Tightly woven and durable, the weatherproof fabric revolutionised rainwear with its breathable and lightweight qualities, and went on to form the basis of our iconic trench coat. The origins of our signature outerwear design can be found in the Tielocken, a coat patented in 1912 and designed by Thomas Burberry. Now worn across the world, our trench coat has evolved over the years to become the much-recognised style of today.
The new campaign
Our latest campaign was shot by Mario Testino at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. British models Jean Campbell and Alex Dragulele and musician Cavan McCarthy wear pieces from the September runway collection. The images are juxtaposed with portraits of The Burberry Artisans, men and women from mills and factories in England, Scotland and Italy whose passion and skill contributes to the making of our products.
