Made in the UK,
the Scarf
The Burberry Check cashmere scarf is one of our most iconic designs and an enduring house code. Made in Scotland by our long-standing partner Johnstons of Elgin, it is synonymous with our values of craftsmanship, function and protection from the weather.
Produced In Scotland
Woven on traditional looms at a
mill founded in 1797, it takes more
than 30 steps to weave a single scarf.
Each stage is completed by dedicated
craftspeople using expert knowledge
passed down from generation to
generation.

Crafted from Cashmere
The fabric is washed in local
spring water from the surrounding
countryside and brushed with teasels
– dried flowers that are drawn along
the surface of the cashmere to ‘raise’
the cloth, creating a natural lustre
and an ultra-soft finish.

Iconic Details
A careful dyeing process ensures
only the most vivid colours in the
yarns of the Burberry Check. The
scarf is then finished with fringing,
using a specialised machine that
stretches and twists each thread
together.

The Burberry Check scarf was born from innovation, when a buyer in the Burberry Paris store thought to remove the check lining of a trench and use it to create new accessories.

Our Craftsmanship
Cashmere Sourcing
The fibre harvest takes place at the time the goats would naturally be shedding their warm winter coats, ensuring it can be easily removed.
Production Process
Johnstons of Elgin is B Corp certified, and its wholly owned sites run on 100 per cent certified, renewable electricity*. It is also our longest standing partner of over 120 years and shares our commitment to responsible craftsmanship.
British Artisanal Excellence
Johnstons of Elgin is a family-run business and is the only mill left in Scotland that takes a raw fibre and carries it through every stage of its transformation to the final product.
